Research Paper prompt 2020-2021

Research papers are an important component to any "College Prep" History course as college history classes require essay writing. For this research paper, follow MLA format. 4-5 page minimum (rubric deductions occur under 4 pages of text. Times New Roman, 12 font, double spaced is universal.

Student Learning Objective #1- Students will develop a thesis statement and research in order to write an essay that proves the thesis statement.

Student Learning Objective #2- Students will practice writing and citing in MLA format and will receive opportunities to resubmit and show growth.

Students will use the following steps in order to accomplish these objectives:

1. 5/10- ZOOM- Mr. Cook will introduce the essay prompt and these steps.

2. 5/10- Students will pick a topic from the following list or will approve a topic not on the list with P. Cook.

3. 5/10- Students will write a thesis statement based on the topic chosen.

4. 5/10- Students will submit their topic and thesis statement to google classroom. (formative grade) Make sure you read the feedback from Mr. Cook.

5. No zoom- 5/11 and 5/12- Students research- look for sources which could support your thesis. Try to cite your sources in a Works Cited in MLA format using citation machine or easybib.com. Mr. Cook will go over the format and tips Thursday, 5/13 when students have had some time to find sources.

6. No zoom- 5/11 and 5/12- Start writing your paragraphs. Remember, each paragraph must prove your thesis statement with research. Paraphrase mostly, which means put it in your own words. For quotes, make sure you explain how it proves your thesis. Always ask or email questions. Try to cite correctly in each paragraph. That will also be reviewed by Mr. Cook 5/13.

7. 5/13- ZOOM- Mr. Cook will go over Works Cited format and parenthetical citations. Afterward, students will submit their preliminary Works Cited on google classroom. Make sure you read Mr. Cook's comments! After that, students work on writing their essay!

Works Cited requirements:

3 source minimum
MLA format required
Alphabetize entries once they are in MLA format
Hanging indent required

Parenthetical citations must be made in each body paragraph (and also the intro and conclusion if non-common knowledge is used) and it is whatever comes before the first major punctuation in the works cited for each source

8. 5/14- ZOOM- Mr. Cook will review the rubric used to grade the assignment. Afterward, students work on writing their essay!

9. 5/17- All students in person! We will learn a little bit about East Asia each day, but students will be given time at the end of most blocks to work on their research essay.

10. Friday, 5/28- Essays are due. You will receive the class block time, but then we will be finished with class time for the essay. Upload to google classroom. Remember that plagiarism detection software is used. Plagiarism receives a score of zero. Mr. Cook will grade the non-plagiarized essays, and return them with a detailed rubric. Students will be able to re-submit after going over Mr. Cook's comments and revising. If students want to go over Mr. Cook's comments with him, please make an appointment. The Essay is a Summative grade!

Quarter 4 Cultural Traditions

Student Learning Objective- Students will explain cultural practices from a specific country. Later, the class shares at least one detail about each country. It is our goal to get even a small picture of what it is like to live in each country and how that would affect a citizen or a traveler.

Directions: Complete on the same country as you had for the World Nations Report (see separate post). Find answers on credible sources whether they are online or print. Any plagiarism results in a zero. Paraphrase your answers and list the source or sources that you used after every question response. Do not merely list the sources at the end. You must indicate what source or sources you use for each question’s answer. Answer in complete sentences. Typed responses are preferred. If you handwrite this assignment, it must be legible. In that case, upload with a picture on the written document. Pictures and other attachments must be labeled. It is as easy as this. Number each one. Answer in full sentences. Give the picture if needed and always the sources used before numbering the next. Upload to google classroom by the end of class on 5/7. This is a 4th quarter Summative grade. Class time will be provided to students 5/5, 5/6, and 5/7.

South and Southeast Asia Article Summaries and Analysis

Directions: Summarize and analyze 3 articles. 1 needs to be about South Asia, 1 needs to be from Southeast Asia and 1 can be from anywhere around the world. NOT USA! This is World Regions 11. Upload to google classroom or complete on paper and hand in physcially. I like bbc.com for world news. Plagiarism receives a score of zero! If you don't know what region a country is in, look on the old map quiz study posts or ask!

Summarize- Show you know! You should have at least 2 sentences explaining what the article is about in your own words (paraphrase).

Analyze- This means to "examine methodically". Why is it important? Or why are you interested in it? If you would rather evaluate, explain why something is good or bad. Evaluating is just as good as analyzing.

Studying for the South and Southeast Asia Test (4/15)

The South and Southeast Asia Test is Thursday, April 15. Remember, all tests in WRC 11 CP are 100% notes and discussion based. Anything from the book or online was covered in class too. The class will review in class Wednesday, 4/14, but study, study and more studying. The multiple choice and open response questions are based on the class essential questions.
